Fritz 15 is the legendary chess software. The current engine was created by Vasik Reilich, the developer of Rybka (although you can use it with other engines, both free and commercial). It takes some work to install (damn activation keys!), and the interface is as difficult as any free software, but it has a huge database and a couple of nice features. I especially like Friend Mode, where you play against PC, but it adjusts to your level. There are not too direct hints - thanks to them you can learn and perfectly understand how one move is better than others.
Fritz 15 also includes a 6 month membership to Playchess.com. If you want the complete package and can afford to spend the money, this is a perfectly reasonable choice. It's no easier to use than the free alternatives, so I'd look for tutorial videos.
If you want to spend less, the Fritz 14 is available, as is the regular $20 Fritz powered by the Fun 13. While the name might sound like it's simplified, it's not—later versions have the same features. In addition, you can connect the latest engines.
