"Eagle and Tails" behind the scenes: how the program is filmed
On the screen, everything looks natural and simple: the presenter walks around the city, communicates with local people, tells and shows the sights. However, smart viewers understand that they are following him: the director, cameraman and screenwriter. There is one person on the screen, but in reality - a team of four. In some series, the presenter spends the night in a tent on a glacier. But where does the technical staff sleep? Many viewers have doubts: do the presenters really spend the night in terrible hostels or, on the contrary, rent luxurious apartments in expensive hotels? Maybe everything these are staged scenes in the pavilion at the Dovzhenko film studio? And then they are diluted with pictures of sights ... Of course, not everything is going smoothly with the program "Eagle and Tails" behind the scenes. How do operators film the communication of the presenters with the local population? True, fifty thousand paid for the room in a hotel where Elton John, Marlene Dietrich, Marilyn Monod and Charlie Chaplin have stayed. And Madagascar turned out to be the cheapest, where the presenter simply had nowhere to throw money, and with all his imagination, he was able to spend only $ 32. Singapore ranks second in terms of budget travel. True, this refers to the leader with a hundred dollars. If you spend the night in a tent in the city park, in a special place for camping, then it will take only $ 34 for food and museums for two days. Some of the objects that the presenters talk about are sometimes seen by the viewer from a bird's eye view. How is Eagle and Tails really filmed? It was decided within the framework of this season to show those cities that have not yet been filmed. It turned out to be difficult - after all, the creative team already had five years of eventful travel behind them. Therefore, the approved route did not resemble a straight line, but rather a cardiogram. In some countries it was not possible to open a visa, others were frankly dangerous. It included various curiosities, dangerous or funny moments cut from the main show. Moreover, the difficulties began on the very first day - the Group was not allowed to make professional shooting at this place. Theater or reality?
Surprisingly, the presenters of each series were in a different outfit. This aroused suspicion. But clothes (as well as European food to some countries) brought from Ukraine. But in the case of the draw, everything is fair. There were only two occasions when a coin was tossed in the studio: when one of the presenters was delayed in issuing a visa. The suspicion of the audience was also aroused by the magical ability of the hosts to “open all doors”: wherever they come (supposedly spontaneously), they are shown everything and taken everywhere. This is explained by the way the show "Eagle and Tails" is filmed: two or three days before the arrival of the presenters, the director arrives in the city. And before him, negotiations are still underway about places in hotels, ordering a car, etc. The director determines the route of both presenters and locations. It defines cheap and expensive dining places, sights that are worth showing. But this does not mean at all that the show "Eagle and Tails" is completely staged. The presenters do not have written texts, they give out emotions from what they see directly, they do not play, but live. But even with such preparation, there are overlays. One of them took place in Alma-Ata. The director, before filming the program "Eagle and Tails", found a cafe in which he was assured that it was very budget. When the presenter, with her already not full hundred dollars, came there and ordered beshbarmak, she was billed $ 110! "Heaven and Hell"

Shooting in each city takes at least 3, maximum 5 days, depending on the city. At 7-8 in the morning, the group leaves the hotel and travels to locations, each takes about three hours. The largest number of places that the group managed to visit in one day is six, which is really a lot.
3. Who selects the program of stay? Do the leaders participate in the development of the route, do they take into account their wishes? Before the trip, the editors of the program do a lot of preparatory work: write out addresses of interesting places, find out the cost of entrance tickets to museums and excursions, read forums, and communicate with locals. So you know better where it’s really tasty, and where it’s not, where there is something to see. Although the opposite also happens. Some advise some sights, praise, the group comes - and there is nothing special. So a third of the scenes filmed never make it into the cut. If the presenter has wishes, he can make his proposal for filming. But in general, the presenters are given full carte blanche already in place, since the program does not have prescribed dialogues and a script.
4. How is bird's-eye survey shooting technically carried out?
A quadcopter shoots from a bird's eye view - a special small radio-controlled helicopter, to which a camera is attached. Thanks to this cool technical thing, very beautiful spans are obtained! During the filming of the panorama of the city in Rotterdam, a plane crash occurred: a quadrocopter crashed into a skyscraper! The helicopter could not be restored, but the main problem was not this, but the loss of a precious shooting day: the police arrested the entire group for a day.
5. In an emergency, does the operator come to the aid of the leader?
His main task is not to let go of the camera in any situation, so as not to miss the leader from the frame. And not only him. So, during filming in Ho Chi Minh City, kites were filmed on one of the beaches. Everything went well, the group went to the car, leaving the operator to film the local beauty. An hour later, he ran to his colleagues, completely happy, telling how, in his presence, some local woman fell into one of the sandy funnels. At first he rushed to her aid, and then he thought - what a shot!
In a difficult situation, the producer can intervene. For example, on the set in Morocco, a local old man attacked the presenters, since video filming was prohibited, he threatened to call the police. The producer began to distract the grandfather with conversations, while the others filmed the scene and scattered in different directions.
And there are situations that no one could have foreseen and did not have time to react. So, Regina Todorenko fell from a seven-meter height in Alaska when she crossed a mountain river along a log. The girl's legs slipped. Fortunately, she escaped with abrasions and fright.
6. Which issue is the most expensive, taking into account the funds spent on flights and visas?
Nobody remembers this anymore, the program has more than 80 countries. But there is an opinion that London has become the most expensive - the presenter with a gold card spent a record amount of $ 53,557 there! Moreover, a significant part of this amount was spent only on the hotel: two days in a luxurious room of the most prestigious hotel in London, where Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich and Elton John once stayed, cost $ 50,000. After that, the remaining 3507 seemed like crayons expenses.
7. In which city was the owner of the tails the least money spent?
The cheapest place for tourists was Madagascar. In two days, only $32 was spent there with difficulty. And there’s not much to spend on anything: there are no museums, no theaters, no libraries. Singapore, by the way, takes an honorable second place. Of the $100, only $33.33 was spent. The main expense item was spending on food, since you can spend the night in Singapore in your own tent pitched in any park in the city. It is enough just to get permission in special machines. One condition - camping is allowed no more than eight days a month.
8. Has there ever been a shortage of money? How did you do it in these cases?
In any unclear situation, call the producers. They will not leave the leader in trouble, but then be ready for a serious conversation. Such a case occurred in Kazakhstan, when Nastya Korotkaya, having a budget of 100 dollars, had dinner at a restaurant for 112, without knowing it herself. In Almaty, she decided to visit a traditional restaurant with national food. At the entrance, she was assured that all the food here is inexpensive, the prices are modest, affordable for the average tourist. A yurt with a fireplace, covered with carpets, filled with crystal vases and forged dishes, did not lead Nastya to suspicious thoughts. She ordered a portion of beshbarmak, and the owner began to throw everything on the table - camel milk, koumiss, sweet pies. He said it was just for testing. When the bill came out, Nastya was shocked - 112 dollars! I had to call the producers and ask them to pay for lunch. Of course, Nastya was helped in such a force majeure situation. She took the rest of the lunch with her, and the whole film crew finished it for two more days. Well, the plot was completely cut out of the program.
9. Were all bottles with wrapped banknotes found?
To date, almost everything, the fastest discovered those that were hidden in the season about the USSR. Viewers rushed to look for the bottle just a minute after the presenter announced its location on the air. In addition to one hundred dollars, each bottle contains a note with instructions to take a photo or record a video, in a word, capture the joyful moment of finding the treasure and send the record to Eagle and Tails. They flew to the USA in the first season, and in the anniversary season, and in the shopping special project. The presenters have even reached Seattle, Chicago, Dallas and New Orleans.
11. Have there been clashes with the police? What local regulations did you encounter on site? What came as a complete surprise?
In New York, it was decided that one of the presenters would spend the night at the station: in preparation, the forums found a huge number of reviews of experienced travelers who did just that. Upon arrival, it turned out that these stories did not correspond to reality. At Grand Central Station, located in the heart of Manhattan, no one slept or even dozed off. It seemed strange, but Zhanna Badoeva still lay down on the bench. But a minute later, a policeman noticed her and escorted her out of the room. It turned out that in the waiting room it is strictly forbidden to even doze off while sitting in an armchair, to say nothing of sleeping on a bench.
On the set of the season "Eagle and Tails in the USSR" there were a lot of difficulties, although initially no one thought that they would arise. In Minsk, the guys were constantly stopped by policemen, they were forbidden to film even the parade, and ordinary residents were very suspicious and aggressive at the sight of the cameras. In Dushanbe, on the contrary, the shooting had to be stopped every now and then, because the presenters (Bednyakov and Korotkaya) were recognized and they certainly wanted to take a picture with them, get an autograph or treat them to something. Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan refused to issue visas, so the announced releases about Samarkand, Tashkent and Ashgabat never aired.
12. Did you really lose the leading documents, phones? What force majeure situations have you encountered?
Mexico City holds the record for lost passports. First, Bednyakov lost his passport there - and this was his very first business trip as a leader. Fortunately, they managed to shoot the program: Andrei discovered the loss of his passport at the Mexico City airport before flying to Paris. As a result, he spent 16 hours in the transit zone and was deported home.
Masha Ivakova (“Heads and Tails. Shopping”), on the contrary, lost her passport as soon as she arrived in the Mexican capital. In the hotel room, she discovered that the wallet and documents were missing from the bag. Since the guys got to the hotel by city taxi, without wasting time, they began to call the office. But the negotiations did not bring results, neither local residents, nor airport employees, nor even police officers were in a hurry to help foreign tourists. The Russian embassy helped to resolve the situation, which issued Masha a certificate of return, allowing her to fly home.
In the Philippines, a phone was stolen from Regina Todorenko, and in Mongolia, a horde of ticks attacked the entire film crew. In Batumi, Andrei Bednyakov was fined for trying to pick flowers from a tree for Jeanne.
In Jamaica, a cameraman was attacked by a native with a knife, and the group had to travel with guards. And in Rio de Janeiro, the camera was snatched from the cameraman right during the street carnival. The most intense, perhaps, was in Kenya. After sunset, it is generally undesirable to appear on the streets there. And ten minutes did not pass, as the group was tried to be arrested or even robbed.
13. Hosts sometimes make expensive purchases. What happens to them? Do they keep them?
Always different. They can leave something, give something to colleagues or to charity. And in one issue, the presenter bought an elephant in India. Guess where he put it then?
14. For what reasons did the presenters leave the program?
The main thing in "Eagle and Tails" has always been the unique format of the project, and not the face of the presenter. The reasons are different, one of them, of course, fatigue.
General fatigue from impressions (yes, yes, this is possible), travel and flights (three or four programs are filmed in different countries in one business trip), constant lack of sleep (on the set, the hosts sleep for four hours). The team's longest business trip was in the third season to South America. The guys visited five cities (Rio, Sao Paulo, Santiago, Cusco and Buenos Aires), the duration of the business trip with days off was 25 days. And no matter how incredible landscapes and amazing things you meet on the street, fatigue can overpower everything. Therefore, when asked how the presenters spend their free time at home, between filming, almost everyone unanimously answers: “I get enough sleep!”
15. Who pays for the trips?
The program has sponsors and a little green elf with a pot of gold.
